CITY OF NEW HAVEN TO DEDICATE SCULPTURE IN LEWIS STREET PARK
(11/6/2009) -The City of New Haven will dedicate “Moai” a contemporary sculpture by Vermont artist Christopher Solbert, which was recently donated to the City. The eight foot high blue, red and green metal artwork has been installed in Lewis Street Park (Front & Lewis Streets in Fair Haven) and will be formally presented to the City on Friday, November 6 at 12:45pm. Donated by Mary B. and the late Robert L. Arnstein, the artwork was inspired by the artist’s appreciation of the mammoth sculptures on Easter Island. Mrs. Arnstein, a long time art collector, has also provided an endowment for future maintenance of the work.
“Moai” now becomes part of the City of New Haven’s extensive public art collection which numbers almost three hundred pieces. Solbert, a commercial welder, has expertise in welding different alloys and has created both large and small scale metal works that have been exhibited throughout the Northeast. His work is included in the private collections of the National Academy of Science in Washington, D.C., the offices of Credit Suisse First Boston and Davis Polk & Wardwell in Tokyo, Japan, and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Cold Spring Harbor, New York, among others.
